I’ve loved opera since I was in middle school. I was in the choir for 3 years (mostly because the choir performed at Disneyland every year and my family was really poor and I knew the only way I’d ever make to that magical place was to join the choir and sell hella candy). One year, the San Francisco Opera came and did a program with the choir where we learned all about one opera, it was La Traviata that year, and then, with the opera singers, performed a short English version for the school. Then the choir went on a field trip to the War Memorial Opera House in SF and got to see the real thing.
I was starstruck. It was just so beautiful. The set, the singing, the costumes… When my mom picked me up that evening after the field trip, she said I was glowing.
Since then, I’ve been to several operas, but either small productions or through school field trips (I joined the Theater Goers Club in high school and once again sold hella candy to get my fix).
A couple of weeks ago, I saw discounted tickets for Madama Butterfly at the War Memorial Opera House on LivingSocial and decided to take myself on my own perfect date.
Madama Butterfly is about an arrogant, fetishizing, misogynist, pedophile who leaves his pregnant teenage wife in poverty for years while he returns home to America to marry a “real American wife” and then returns 3 years later to take her son away, so she kills herself. I’m not in love with this opera, but I am in love with opera in general, so I take what I can get.
Anyway, this dress is from eshakti. I wore it in my friend’s wedding last summer. It makes me feel like a fancy beauty queen.
